WOODBURY, Minn. — Alamo Drafthouse the sequel is coming soon to a theater in Woodbury.
The cinema franchise announced it will be reopening its Woodbury location Tuesday, Aug. 28 after closing abruptly earlier this summer. The owners reportedly filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this year, forcing several locations, including the Woodbury cinema, to close its doors.
To celebrate the reopening, Alamo Drafthouse is offering $5 movie tickets and discounted food items for moviegoers on opening day. The franchise distinguished itself with its drinks and dine-in food service during their movies.
Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired Alamo Drafthouse back in June, and said it would be reopening the theaters. For many years, Hollywood studios were banned from owning theaters, that changed in 2020 when the Paramount Consent Decrees were terminated, according to the Association Press.
“We are beyond thrilled to join forces with Sony Pictures Entertainment to expand our company vision to be the best damn cinema that has ever, or will ever, exist now in ways we could only ever dream of,” said Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League in a statement following the sale. “They have a deep respect and understanding of cinema’s ability to both drive growth and create lasting cultural impact which aligns perfectly with everything Alamo Drafthouse stands for.”
