Gas line leak prompts preventative emergency alert; officials say there's no lingering threat

Police told KARE 11 that neighborhood residents were asked to "evacuate for precautions" as crews worked to repair the line.

ANNANDALE, Minn. — Some viewers who watched KARE 11's 5 p.m. newscast Tuesday were surprised to see an alert across their screens, announcing a "civil danger warning."

So, what did it mean?

According to Annandale police, the alert was prompted by crews who reportedly accidentally "nicked" a gas line in the area of Plymouth Avenue and Highland Street West during a road construction project Tuesday afternoon. Police told KARE 11 that neighborhood residents were asked to "evacuate for precautions" as crews worked to repair the line.

The leak resulting from the compromised gas line, which happened around 3 p.m., was fixed about two hours later. Police said residents started returning to their homes just before 5:30 p.m.

Police said crews stayed on scene to ensure the leak was fixed permanently, and that no one was hurt or injured as a result of the leak.
