Armed man shuts down Interstate 35 in Faribault

Nearby residents were told to shelter in place as the man was armed on the busy road on Sunday afternoon.

FARIBAULT, Minn. — A police pursuit escalated to a standoff on Interstate 35 before law enforcement resolved it without any injuries Sunday afternoon near Faribault.

According to the Rice County Sheriff's Office, police pursued a vehicle until it stopped on northbound I-35 south of Faribault around 3 p.m. A man left the vehicle and pulled out a handgun before walking into southbound traffic lanes. 

Rice County Sheriff's Office and the Southeast Minnesota Violent Crime Enforcement Team shut down the section of the highway and told nearby residents to shelter in place. The man paced around I-35 for about four hours with the handgun, before firing multiple rounds, according to the Rice County Sheriff's Office. 

Officials used non-lethal measures to take the man into custody around 7 p.m. No injuries were reported, according to the press release.
