MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota attorney general has filed a lawsuit against the Epilepsy Foundation of Minnesota, claiming the charity has allowed the thrift store chain Savers to use signs that are misleading to donors.
Attorney General Lori Swanson last month sued Savers alleging it wasn't being truthful with people who donate clothing and household goods about how much their donations are benefiting charities.
Three charities have stopped doing business with Savers following the attorney general's compliance report on Savers. A fourth charity has entered into a compliance agreement with Swanson's office.
On Monday, the attorney general sued a fifth charity, the Epilepsy Foundation, saying Savers solicited donations on behalf of the foundation even though the donations didn't benefit the charity. Executive director Vicki Kopplin says the foundation is reviewing the lawsuit but had no comment.
In a statement, Savers says the company will "vigorously defend" its business.
