ST PAUL, Minn. — A baby zebra has come into the world at Como Zoo in St. Paul.
The zoo announced the successful birth on Thursday. They said the zebra foal was born early Thursday morning, and when zookeepers arrived for the day, they found it up on four legs, walking and closely shadowing its mother, Minnie.
The foal's sex has not yet been determined. Zookeepers say they'd been expecting the birth.
“Minnie was getting very big, we knew it was a matter of days before her baby would make its appearance,” said Jo Kelly, senior zookeeper. “There were no complications and mother and baby appear to be doing great.”
This baby is Minnie's third foal. The zebra herd at Como Zoo, which also includes the father Ulysses, can be seen at the outdoor zebra and kudu exhibit from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
The zebras at Como Zoo are Grant's Zebras, which are found in the grassy plains of east African countries like Kenya and Ethiopia.
