BCA investigating after man with hatchet is fatally shot in Crookston

Crookston Police Chief Darin Selzler says his officers first used less lethal measures, but the man refused to stop advancing on them.

CROOKSTON, Minn. — Agents from the BCA and a support team are in far northwestern Minnesota following a use-of-force incident involving law enforcement that left a man dead.

Police in Crookston say just before 1 a.m. Thursday officers encountered a man near 7th Street and North Broadway who was in the street swinging a hatchet. Chief Darin Selzler shared in a news release that when contact was initiated with the man he rapidly approached officers and they attempted to use less lethal means were deployed on the suspect.

Despite their efforts, Chief Selzler says the man continued to advance on his officers and they fired their weapons. Despite lifesaving care on the scene, the suspect died later at the hospital in Crookston.

Crookston police requested that the BCA handle the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure for many departments to avoid a conflict of interest.

Chief Selzler added that no additional information will be released at this time as the investigation into the fatal shooting is ongoing.
