PINE CITY, Minn. — Authorities are investigating two separate "use-of-force" incidents Tuesday in Pine County, both involving deputies from the Pine County Sheriff's Office. One of the incidents also involved the Minnesota State Patrol, officials say.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said the first incident occurred just before 2 p.m. in Pine City when deputies were attempting to arrest a man wanted on a felony warrant. At some point, BCA officials say deputies shot and injured the man. The suspect was transported to a hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The BCA confirmed a second "use-of-force" incident at around 4 p.m. on Interstate 35 just south of Sandstone. According to a press release, state troopers were pursuing a speeding vehicle when it went into a ditch. The release said stop sticks were deployed but it's not clear whether they were effective in deflating the tires of the fleeing vehicle.
Officials say the driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was told to exit the vehicle but didn't comply. Deputies fired "less-than-lethal" rounds before deploying a K-9.
When deputies approached the vehicle, authorities say the person was dead with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head. According to the press release, a handgun was found inside the vehicle and no law enforcement official ever fired their gun.
The BCA says both deputies and troopers were wearing body cameras during both incidents.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is released.
