MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) released new information on the events that unfolded during the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis police officer on Blaisdell Avenue Thursday.
Squads initially responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment on Blaisdell Avenue. Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was the first on the scene, according to information released Sunday by the BCA.
Over his police radio, Mitchell said he saw two injured men on the street, one who has since been identified as suspected shooter Mustafa Mohammed.
Mitchell then exited his car and approached Mohammed, who was sitting next to his own vehicle.
BCA agents said when Mitchell asked Mohammed if he needed help, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Mitchell at close range several times.
As other officers approached, Mohammed began shooting at them as well.
At that point, the BCA said Minneapolis police officer Nick Kapinos discharged his handgun, while fellow officer Luke Kittock fired his department rifle, striking Mohammed.
Kittock was injured in the exchange of gunfire and was treated and released from the hospital. A Minneapolis firefighter was also treated for injures suffered in the shooting.
A bystander who was shot remains in critical but stable condition, according to the BCA.
BCA personnel recovered a handgun with an extended cartridge at the scene. The agency is also reviewing the homicide that occurred inside the apartment building at the request of the MPD. One person in that building was killed while another is hospitalized and officials said they are in "grave condition."
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
