MANKATO, Minn. - One step closer to home.

After 5 months of hospitals and rehab centers, former Minnesota State University at Mankato linebacker Isaac Kolstad has been released from in-patient rehab and will begin the transition of returning to his family's home in Mankato to begin rebuilding his life.

Kolstad's wife Molly broke the news on his CaringBridge site Friday. She wrote:

"It is with a full heart that I update you all that today Isaac was discharged from inpatient care! After 5 months of being confined to a facility, of sleeping in a twin sized hospital bed, of reporting daily to nurses, doctors, therapists, and aides, Isaac is finally released and free to go home. He and his entire family are incredibly excited to take this huge step in Isaac's recovery and start the process of transitioning back to family life. But even though we have been discharged from inpatient status, does not mean we are done with therapy yet. Far from done. Isaac is now going to complete several outpatient programs and continue rehabbing as he still has a vast number of things to work and improve on. We are so thankful that Isaac has finally reached a point where being in his own home is safe again. He can't wait to sleep in his own bed! Miracles happen and dreams come true."

That's not to say Kolstad's work is done. His wife says Isaac will continue outpatient physical and cognitive therapy every week at Courage Center to speed recovery of his brain and body. Because the facilities are located in the Twin Cities the Kolstad's will continue to live here, but plans call for them to transition to the family home in Mankato some time in the near future.

Isaac Kolstad suffered serious brain injuries during an altercation outside a Mankato nightclub in mid-May. Two men are charged with assault in the incident.
