'It's a miracle' Becker teen recovers following head-on collision

Aliyah Szabla gained enough strength to surprise her robotics team on Friday with a visit.

BECKER, Minn. — A Becker High School student has made a remarkable recovery following a head-on collision in early February. Aliyah Szabla had angels watching over her that day because first responders told her mom that she shouldn't have survived the crash.

"They told us she might not be Aliyah. She might not be able to walk again. She might not be able to talk again," Christie Szabla said.

The 17-year-old suffered a traumatic brain injury, fractured and broken bones. To everyone's surprise, she made it out of the ICU in six days and has been rehabilitating ever since. Her doctors gave her the clear to go visit friends.

On Friday, the Becker Robotics Team gathered to hear from, what they thought was just going to be Aliyah's mom, until she came around the corner herself.

"Hello!" Alijah said to the crowd of shocked faces.

Tears came rolling down her robotic teammates' faces as they lined up to give her hugs.

"She needs you. Being around her team will help her heal," Christie told the group.

The team is hoping Aliyah, their safety manager, will be strong enough to compete with them at the end of March.
