MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is warning beach-goers about the presence of blue-green algae in a sample from Lake Nokomis.
Parks officials released a statement Wednesday saying the latest sample taken from the lake's main beach revealed exceeding levels of Microcystin, a toxin produced by blue-green algae (cyanobacteria).
Due to those findings, the MPRB issued a hazardous algae advisory for Lake Nokomis Main Beach. Officials said the advisory is effective immediately.
Meantime, the MPRB has a list of recommendations for beach and lake visitors during the advisory:
- When in doubt, stay out: Do not swim when a suspected hazardous algae bloom is present.
- Don’t play in algae scum or mats in the water or on the shore.
- Before cooking any fish caught in the lake, throw away guts and clean fillet with tap or bottled water.
- If exposed to blue-green algae, shower and rinse immediately.
