Body of missing canoeist located in Curtain Falls

Weather and water conditions have proven a large factor in search efforts with more rainfall expected over the weekend.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. — Editor's Note: The above video first aired on 5/20/2024.

The body of one of the two canoeists who went missing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area has been located.

Rescue squads from St. Louis County located the body of 41-year-old Jesse Haugen of Cambridge on Friday, according to a release from the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

Haugen's body was found near Curtain Falls, said the sheriff's office, but the search for the second missing canoeist, 40-year-old Reis Grams, continues.

Weather and water conditions have proven a large factor in search efforts with more rainfall expected over the weekend, according to the statement.

Initially, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said a 911 caller contacted dispatchers from Iron Lake in the popular Boundary Waters Canoe Area just before 7:30 p.m. to report a water emergency on May 19. The caller said two canoes had gone over Curtain Falls between Iron and Crooked Lakes, leaving one paddler badly injured and two others unaccounted for.

Governor Walz previously authorized the Minnesota National Guard to assist in the search.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
