BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — At a Tuesday afternoon press conference, officials said crews pulled a body from the Minnesota River while searching for a vehicle in the water.
On Sunday night crews from multiple departments responded to the Lyndale Avenue Boat Launch for a report a vehicle entered the river.
Police said bystanders saw the vehicle enter the water and become fully submerged. The Hennepin County Water Patrol located the vehicle but the extreme current made it unsafe for divers to enter the water.
"The waters are dangerous, I mean, we have very high, high amount of water as well as the current is really fast," Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said.
Attempts to pull the vehicle out of the water were unsuccessful on Sunday. At around 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, officials were able to pull the vehicle out of the water, and a body was found inside the vehicle. The identity and cause of death will be announced at a later time by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.
"It was in 24 feet of water, about 500 feet off this landing. That just tells you how bad that current is or how fast that current is right now," Witt said.
While using sonar to recover the vehicle, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office Water Patrol Deputies located a second vehicle nearby. Officials say they believe the second vehicle had been in the water for "some time," therefore, they don't believe the two incidents are related.
"We weren't expecting to find another vehicle," the sheriff said.
