Bodycam video to be released Tuesday in St. Paul officer-involved shooting

Police Chief Todd Axtell says the release will come after the essential parts of BCA investigation are complete, and the family of Ronald Davis views the tape.

ST PAUL, Minn. — The bodycam video of an encounter that led to a man being fatally shot by a St. Paul Police officer will be released Tuesday.

Police Chief Todd Axtell made that announcement Friday, saying the release will come after the essential parts of BCA investigation are complete, and the family of 31-year-old Ronald Davis has had the opportunity to view the video first.

Davis died last Sunday evening just before 6 p.m. after he rear ended a St. Paul Police officer who was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Thomas Avenue West and North Griggs Street. Investigators say Officer Steven Mattson got out of his vehicle and was immediately confronted by Davis.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said earlier this week Davis was carrying a knife. BCA agents maintain Davis kept advancing despite Officer Mattson's repeated commands to drop the weapon, and the officer eventually opened fire.

Davis was declared dead on the scene. The BCA says a knife was found near his body.

Immediately after the officer-involved shooting St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter asked his police chief to release the footage "as soon as reasonably possible."
