GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - "Wait, what's in this drink?"
Not exactly a lyric that flies in 2016. But the classic "Baby, it's Cold Outside" remains a staple on Christmas playlists this time of year.
One Minnesota couple felt it was time to change the status quo. They re-imagined the lyrics to the infamous song, emphasizing consent and making it more appropriate for today's audience.
Songwriters Lydia Liza and Josiah Lemanski say they discussed how terrible the original song was at a local ice cream shop and the idea just kind of came to them to take their own stab at it. It didn't take long for others to take note.
“It was stuck in my head because it’s Christmas and I was singing the words in my head and I thought, 'Oh, I don’t like that,” said Lemanski of the original song.
“In terms of knowing it would do what it did, we had no idea. We didn’t know it would go totally viral but it makes sense, it struck a chord with people,” Liza said.
Liza and Lemanski posted the song to Soundcloud a week ago, and since then, they've been featured on CNN, Huffington Post, TIME and more.
