Mad For No Reason: An anthem by a Minnetonka 10-year-old

COVID crashed into Mira's life at 7, and like us all, turned her world inside out. But now at 10, she's just trying to make sense of a world that seems out of tune.

MINNEAPOLIS — "... And then I let the music take me where it takes me."

That's 10-year-old Mira Babal explaining her creative process for writing songs like, "Mad For No Reason."

"It's inspired by people being mad for no reason," Mira said.

COVID crashed into Mira's life at the age of 7, and like the rest of us, turned her world inside out. But now at 10, she's just trying to make sense of a world that she sees as a bit... out of tune.

"There have been plenty of times where I feel like the kids just get neglected on ideas and they have great ideas and everything, but adults won't listen because they feel like this little kid, this little girl, is a kid," Mira said. "We all have different perspectives and I feel like our perspective needs to be seen."

Adding, "I think, it's just, they want to be heard."

When asked what she would fix if she could choose one thing to fix in the world, the pre-teen showed a level of self-awareness not even afforded by a lot of adults.

"We need to be more aware of what we say or what we do," she said. "Don't neglect peoples' feelings; really see how that could impact someone."

Mira said that's how she's living in her life: Trying to hear folks out — even if they're mad for no reason. Because, as she admits, even she can feel mad sometimes, too.

"'Mad for No Reason' is an angry vibe, right? So, it's a way that I can just, you know, let myself be myself," Mira said.

Being herself means playing tennis, coding and hanging out with friends, while her leftover time is spent mastering the music.

"Three-and-a-half, 4; that's when I started piano and then I added on drums, guitar, vocals," she said.

Right now, Mira can play 10 instruments, but playing 20 is part of her long-term plan.

Although, you don't want to push a kid on her plans — after all, that would be a lame grown-up thing to do.

With a bright future full-speed ahead of her, it's not surprising some might wonder where Mira sees herself in 15 years. In fact, she's wondering, too.

"In 15 years? Good question. I mean, I'm not even 15."
