MINNEAPOLIS — Jeff Aguy is a regular at Soul Bowl in Minneapolis’ North Loop and now, he and other customers can find out how their favorite Minneapolis restaurants score on health inspections.
That is a change Soul Bowl owner, Gerard Klass, welcomes.
“I have been fortunate to travel and go to other cities where you have to put your inspection letter on your front door,” Klass said. “ I don't think that Minneapolis has gotten to that part of it yet. I think it is good for that information to be up there. I think it will raise the quality of food that the cities can produce.”
The reports will highlight the wide variety of violations health inspectors look for -- including how food is received, stored and prepared -- to overall cleanliness. If they don't pass those inspections -- violations will be posted.
Aguy said it is a win for the consumer.
“I think it is great for the consumer. I think it is good for us to know how our food is made,” Aguy said. “It will raise the profile of the food and quality of the food in Minneapolis in general.”
Soul Bowl, which started as a pop up restaurant, is already gaining popularity. This week, Oprah Winfrey named Soul Bowl one of five restaurants to join Weight Watchers on its Wellness Mission. At Soul Bowl, they have reimagined soul food, using unique favorites and modern techniques to deliver childhood favorites in a healthy and eye-catching way. Previously, Klass was a corporate chef for Crave and Kaskaid Hospitality.
He has big goals for the next year.
“Our 20/20 vision is to be the number one soul food restaurant in Minneapolis,” Klass said. “That is our goal. We want to check that box off when people are like where should we go, they think Soul Bowl.”
The Soul Bowl restaurant is located in Graze Provisions and Libations Food Hall at 520 N 4th St Suite 202 in Minneapolis.
