MINNEAPOLIS — A new north Minneapolis fitness gym is bringing the community into the conversation when it comes to fitness and health.
This building on Minneapolis’ northside is home to Northside Barbell.
"We moved over here, 1729 North 2nd and opened up," said co-owner, Greg Kimbrough.
Long-time friends and athletes, Kimbrough and co-owner Norman Alston partnered together to open the gym.
“We’ve been talking about this for a long time, we’re both longtime personal trainers," said Kimbrough.
"We met 15-20 years ago playing semi-pro football and we just kind of linked up," said Alston.
With their background in sports and fitness, both wanted to create a welcoming environment for all.
"I went to college at St. Cloud State, and Norman coaches wrestling at North High," said Kimbrough.
"We're performance, but if you want weight loss, we can accommodate that, if you want muscle enhancement, we can accommodate that," said Alston.
And this week as many in the community celebrate the Kwanzaa holiday, the team is hosting daily meditation events.
"A lot of people in my community celebrate Kwanzaa, and my mother was the one who introduced me to Kwanzaa," said Alston.
This gym is a passion project for both Greg and Norman.
"Nothing we’re doing it easy, it’s taken a lot of sacrifice, time, effort, energy, I’ve spent a lot of nights here away from my family, but we’ve had a lot of help from the community," said Kimbrough.
They’re hoping to continue to grow their business.
"That's what I want to provide – a judgement-free zone where people can come be happy and work on themselves," said Alston.
The gym is open daily and is welcoming new memberships.
