APPLE VALLEY, Minn. — The Minnesota Zoo got a few new houseguests!
A group of bottlenose dolphins from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago were placed in Minnesota temporarily while their "Seven Seas" habitat back home undergoes renovation, according to a press release.
Animal care staff from the zoo tagged along with the seven sea critters to care for them and engage with them, "in the same manner they do in Chicago."
“The Minnesota Zoo has a long history of partnering with sister institutions in the fields of animal care, health, and conservation,” said John Frawley, Minnesota Zoo director. “By temporarily providing housing to Brookfield’s dolphins, we are assisting our colleagues in Illinois as they make habitat improvements for enhanced animal care and welfare, while also helping connect Minnesotans to this incredible species and the importance of ocean conservation.”
The dolphins began exploring the zoo's public-viewing Discovery Bay recently. The zoo says the animals will be given time to get used to their environment and, "may be more and more visible in the days ahead."
