BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. — The City of Brooklyn Center named a new police chief, for the third time since 2021.

The city named Garret Flesland as its new police chief, according to a release.

Flesland has worked in the department since 2001 and served in a variety of roles, including patrol officer, detective and commander.

His appointment comes after former Police Chief Kellace McDaniel submitted his resignation a year into the job.

McDaniel took the reigns of the department after his predecessor, Tim Gannon, resigned in April of 2021, two days after Daunte Wright was killed by then-Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter.

Gannon would go on to sue the city, claiming he was racially discriminated against. The lawsuit was dismissed with prejudice in December of 2023.

Flesland testified in Potter's trial, calling her "a good cop, good person and good friend."

He was selected following a nationwide search and was described as a "transformative leader" in the city's release.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
