BCA investigating after police shoot man in Brooklyn Park

The BCA is investigating after Brooklyn Park PD say an officer shot an armed man, while responding to a call of a baby not breathing on Sunday morning.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A man is recovering in the hospital after being shot by police in Brooklyn Park on Sunday morning.

According to the Brooklyn Park Police Department (BPPD), officers were called to the 8700 block of Queens Gardens North just before 4 a.m. on a report of a baby not breathing. When officers arrived, they said they found a 7-month-old child in critical condition. The baby was taken to a nearby hospital and later died.

While police remained in the area investigating the child's death, officers said they encountered a man with a gun around 4:40 a.m.

According to BPPD, an officer shot the man. Crews on scene gave the man emergency medical care and he was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Officers said they recovered a firearm from the scene. The entire incident was captured on body-worn camera video, according to BPPD.

Family members of the man shot said, as of Sunday afternoon, he was in critical condition. His sister told KARE 11 that her brother found his son, who he thought was sleeping, lying in a puddle of milk and not breathing. His sister, who also lives in the house, said her brother went to her for help. She said she performed CPR on her nephew until police arrived 8-10 minutes later.

The family declined an interview on camera but told KARE 11 that after the baby's death, the father was distraught and had threatened to harm himself. At some point, his sister said he went upstairs and locked himself in a room. Another man who lives in the house who gave only his first name, Jordan, said he was worried and broke through the door to try and prevent the man from harming himself. At least two officers also entered the room, according to Jordan.

During the encounter, Jordan said he begged an officer not to shoot the man but heard three to five gun shots. Jordan said eight kids were downstairs at the time of the shooting. The family said they plan to say more once the body-worn camera footage is released. It's unclear when that could happen.

BPPD has not released information about the moments leading up to the shooting but the BCA is now in charge of the investigation. The BCA did not have anyone available for an interview Sunday.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the baby's death.
