Police: Man fired at officers before shooting himself

Brooklyn Park Police said a man shot at officers and hit a squad car before turning the weapon on himself.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — According to police, a man is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting at a Brooklyn Park police Wednesday night, striking a squad car.

In information provided to the media, Brooklyn Park police said officers were called to an address in the 8700 block of Maplebrook Parkway North for a report of shots fired in the area just before 9 p.m.

As an officer was checking out the area, police said someone shot at the officer and struck his squad car.

The officer wasn't hurt, police said, and he took cover while calling for backup. While more officers were arriving emergency dispatchers took a 911 call that said the suspect had shot himself in a nearby driveway.

Police said they determined the man was killed by this shot and found a gun next to him.

Further investigation showed that the suspect had been involved in a domestic incident prior to firing the shots that summoned police to the area. Officers made contact with the woman involved in the domestic and they said she was safe and not hurt in the incident.

Brooklyn Park police said an officer was wearing a body-worn camera that was recording during the incident.

Officials said early on Thursday morning that an "extensive" investigation into this incident is underway.
