HASTINGS, Minn. — A Burnsville man was sentenced to half a decade behind bars for selling fentanyl-laced pills to an Eagan teenager who later died.

Sadiq Aden Isack was given a sentence of 60 months, or five years in prison for his role in providing 16-year-old Hunter Carlson with the laced pills in January 2021.

Eagan police initially responded to a call on the morning of Jan. 18 of that year, where Carlson was found unresponsive by his mother. The police pronounced the teen deceased at the scene.

Law enforcement agencies searched Carlson's room and found a broken pill that would test positive for fentanyl. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner ruled the death a "result of positional asphyxia complicating acute fentanyl toxicity."

According to the release, the night before Carlson and a friend had taken Percocet they had bought from two men in Burnsville. Video surveillance showed a white car, which belonged to Isack's co-defendant Jamal Aden, near Carlson's home on that evening.

Burnsville Police found that white vehicle, Isack and Aden at a motel a few weeks later, according to prosecutors. Inside their hotel room, the police found dozens of pills similar to the one they found in Carlson's room.

Phone records showed text messages between Isack and Carlson's friend, according to the release.

“We need to continue to hold drug dealers accountable for the harm they cause to our communities in Dakota County,” said County Attorney Kathy Keena, in a statement. “My deepest sympathies to Hunter’s family and all families who’ve lost a loved one to fentanyl poisoning.”

Adan was sentenced for his role in the incident in May 2023 and is currently serving his own 60-month sentence.

Isack remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail and awaits transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
