ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. — An evening planned to celebrate the Labor Day weekend turned to tragedy Friday night after a campfire exploded in French Township.

Around 8:20 p.m., emergency crews were called to an address in the 12000 block of Jaranson Road for a report of three people sustaining serious burns due to a campfire.

When crews arrived at the location 20 miles north of Hibbing, they found several people with burn and inhalation injuries. A child who was seriously burned was airlifted to a hospital in the Twin Cities.

Officials said 53-year-old Marvin Theisen of Hibbing died as a result of his injuries.

Police said the fire injured eight people, aged 14 to 60, with injuries ranging from minor to serious.

Family and friends were getting ready to enjoy an evening campfire when an unknown liquid was used to start the fire, officials said. This incident is still under investigation.
