BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A child walking in the middle of a busy county road in Brooklyn Park was struck and killed by a Metro Transit bus early Wednesday.
Metro Transit police say the fatal incident occurred just before 6 a.m. in the northbound lanes of County Road 81 just south of 71st Ave. The driver immediately reported they had struck a person.
Officers from Metro Transit and Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Park firefighters and paramedics, and state troopers responded to the scene and began lifesaving efforts, but they were unsuccessful.
A source at the scene said the victim appeared to be a child between the ages of 8 and 12. Brooklyn Park police said in a release that the child was standing in the middle of the road and that the driver was cooperative with investigators.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the child as 11-year-old Mahad Ahmed Osman on Feb. 3. The boy's cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force injuries and his manner of death was listed as an accident.
No passengers were aboard the bus when the child was struck.
Metro Transit officials say the driver of the bus will undergo drug and alcohol testing and be placed on administrative leave, which is standard policy.
"This is an incredibly sad day at Metro Transit. My heart goes out to the family of the child, our bus operator, and all those affected by this tragedy," said a statement from Metro Transit General Manager Lesley Kandaras.
