Community leaders hope recent Brooklyn Park violence doesn't overshadow progress

Community leaders say they're concerned over the number of young adults and teenagers that are being impacted by recent violence in Brooklyn Park.

BROOKLYN PARK, Minnesota — Brooklyn Park police are investigating the murder of a 21-year-old man who was shot outside of a restaurant on Sunday morning.

"Nothing about this was accidental," Brooklyn Park Police Public Information Officer Elliott Faust said.

Faust said there has been a recent spree of violence in the city, which can be expected during summertime when crime tends to increase. However, community leaders have a concern over the number of young adults and teenagers that are being impacted.

"Our city is moving forward, and I would like for that to not be forgotten," Village BP President Tekoa Cochran said.

Village BP partners with the City of Brooklyn Park and the police department on violence intervention. Community leaders say a lot of progress has already been made to curb violent crime in the city.

Police report a near 45% decrease in violent crime from last year at an apartment complex that used to see some of the highest amounts of crime in the city.

"In this industry, it's unheard of to have an impact like that and it's because of these violence intervention groups," Faust said.

Cochran says there is more work to be done in the city to address not just crime disparities but housing disparities, too. Village BP helps families in need find housing, clothes and food.

"We can only keep working towards a better Brooklyn Park," Cochran said.
