MINNEAPOLIS — A Coon Rapids teenager has been ordered to stand trial as an adult in connection with a fatal shooting and string of robberies, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.
Jered Ohsman, 17, will be tried for two counts of second-degree murder in the shooting death of a man who was sitting in his car, and two counts of first-degree robbery.
KARE 11 is naming Ohsman since he is officially charged and being tried as an adult.
Ohsman was 16 years old at the time the crimes were allegedly committed in early June as part of what prosecutors say was a four-day crime spree.
Steven Markey, 39, of Maple Grove was shot at the intersection of 14th Ave. NE and Tyler St. NE in Minneapolis on June 11th at 4:50 p.m., according to the criminal complaint for the two second-degree murder charges.
Minneapolis police conducted an investigation involving multiple witnesses, reviewed surveillance and came to the conclusion that Ohsman and a 15-year-old accomplice planned to steal the victim's car and rob him, prosecutors said.
Oshman and his accomplice had bandanas over their faces when they fired guns at Markey, who was shot in the wrist, left bicep and left shoulder, the complaint states.
Markey tried to drive away, but crashed and later died from his gunshot wounds at the Hennepin County Medical Center.
After the shooting, the suspects ran alleyways, and surveillance footage shows them changing clothes and hiding a backpack, which contained the weapons used, according to the complaint.
After Ohsman was identified as a suspect in the shooting, investigators discovered he and his accomplice had been arrested for suspicion of auto theft and burglary.
Case details describe Ohsman and his accomplice assaulting a victim in downtown Minneapolis, stealing a car in St. Louis Park later, and using that car to commit a burglary in New Hope where they were apprehended after crashing the stolen vehicle while attempting to flee officers, according to prosecutors.
The two other robberies in which Ohsman was certified as an adult occurred in the early morning of June 9. Both of the robberies involved the two youths pointing a gun at the victims and demanding the belongings of victims, prosecutors said.
Ohsman is expected to make a court appearance Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Prosecutors are seeking $1.5M in bail.
The hearings on whether the 15-year-old should be certified as an adult are ongoing.
