Cottage Grove declares state of emergency due to storms

The storms brought four reports of tornadoes to Minnesota and Wisconsin Thursday night.

COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — Severe weather has reigned the Twin Cities metro this week and Cottage Grove bore the brunt of the storm damage Thursday night.

On the Cottage Grove website, the mayor declared a state of emergency for the city around 10:40 p.m. due to the storm. The severe storms also brought in four reports of tornadoes - one in Isanti and some in St. Croix and Pierce counties in Wisconsin.

Xcel Energy reported about 21,000 customers out of power Thursday night, including many in Cottage Grove. About 10,000 customers were still without power Friday morning.

If homeowners have downed trees or debris in their yards, the city website said to place it at the curb for removal. Public Works will pick up the debris periodically throughout Oct. 1. The city also plans to clear debris on the roads.

If the storm damaged your house or property, contact your insurance company. The City of Cottage Grove said on the website that it would not remove trees or debris on private property.
