Child dies in construction zone crash on Highway 52 in southern Minnesota

The State Patrol website indicates the victim of the crash, which happened late Monday morning, was a 3-year-old boy from St. Paul.

CANNON FALLS, Minn. — A highway in southern Minnesota was closed for several hours on Monday afternoon following a fatal crash in a construction zone.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a semi headed south on Highway 52 collided with a Toyota Camry that crossed the center line and hit the big rig head-on. Road conditions were described as wet at the time of the crash.

The State Patrol website says 3-year-old Sebastian Chavez Garcia from St. Paul, who was riding in the Camry, did not survive the crash. The driver of the car, 28-year-old Maria De Lose Garcia Galindo from St. Paul, is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Troopers say the semi driver, a 39-year-old man from St. Augustine, Florida, suffered only minor injuries and was not hospitalized.

Highway 52 between MN 19 in Cannon Falls and MN 50 in Hampton was shut down for hours to allow for crash reconstruction and cleanup.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the slowdown caused by the collision led to other crashes in the same area, including one between a car and an SUV that caught fire. Troopers said three people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
