Two high school track athletes airlifted after being struck by vehicle in Forest Lake

Officials say the two athletes are are 15-year-old boys and were with a group of runners when they were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 61.

FOREST LAKE, Minn. — Two Forest Lake track athletes were airlifted to a nearby hospital after being struck while crossing Highway 61 with a group of runners Tuesday afternoon.

School officials confirmed the two pedestrians struck were track athletes, but didn't provide any information about the students' identities or their conditions.

"Our hearts are with these students and their families," said Forest Lake Area Schools Superintendent Steve Massey in a letter to families and staff.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the two athletes are 15-year-old boys and were with a group of runners when they were struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 61 shortly after 3:30 p.m. State Patrol said the athletes were at the crosswalk when the vehicle struck the two teens. The driver was identified as an 84-year-old man from Lindstrom, Minnesota.
