MINNEAPOLIS — Crews are on the scene of a fire burning inside an apartment building on the near south side of Minneapolis.

The call came in shortly after 8 a.m. that the building at 1829 5th Ave. S was on fire, and when engines arrived the situation was quickly upgraded to two alarms. The apartment is located just south of the I-35W/I-94 interchange.

Minneapolis Deputy Fire Chief Andrew Norgaard told KARE 11 that arriving firefighters found flames leaping from windows on the top floor. The apartment building is vacant and boarded up, and Norgaard said the fire may have been started by squatters trying to get warm.

If true, it would just be the latest in a series of fires in recent years set by people who occupy vacant homes and buildings. Those structures are often in ill repair, putting responding firefighters in even greater danger.

We are on the scene and will have the latest details on this incident as they become available.
