DURAND, Wis. — A barn is a total loss in rural Pepin County after a fire that left one cow dead.

According to the Pepin County Sheriff's Office, it happened shortly before 1 a.m. in the township of Lima off of County Road R.

When deputies arrived, most of the barn was already fully engulfed, officials said. Authorities and the property owner were able to free most of the cattle as the barn started to collapse.

Several dairy cattle were injured and one died, the sheriff's office said. Multiple area fire departments helped on the scene.
