Deep fried ranch? New food option at the fair already a hit

Day one at the fair also meant the first chance for folks to try out the new fair foods this year, including one that brought some intrigue and skepticism online.

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. — With the return of the Minnesota State Fair, many of our favorite classics are back. From Pronto Pups to deep-fried Oreos, there's plenty of old favorites to try – and plenty of new ones as well.

"It's new, it's something different," Cindy Tamraz said.

Tamraz and her husband, David, live in Florida, but made the trip up to Minnesota for the fair.

"I hear it's Texas and Minnesota fighting to be the best state fairs," David said. "It's definitely number one."

The main reason they're here?

"For the deep fried ranch!" Cindy said, laughing.

Located at Lulu's Public House off Dan Patch, the new fried food has plenty of buzz around it already.

"I'm not a big fan of ranch, but it was pretty good," David said.

Pretty good may be an understatement – lines were long for much of the day.

"We knew by 10 o'clock this morning it was gonna be a hit," Mike Brennan, co-owner of Lulu's, said.

Sales have been so high, they've been frying as fast as they can to meet demand.

"It started out with a mozzarella stick with Ranch Doritos on it, which was terrible," Brennan said.

The process took time to master – Brennan says they work on new food items nearly a year in advance.

"You got winners and losers, you don't always have a home run," he said. "Sometimes you get a single or an out!"

The only question now is how fast can they fry them.

"We're worried we're gonna run out of product before we can get more made," Brennan said, laughing.

The dish comes with four deep fried ranch pockets and a cup of Crybaby Craig's hot honey for $12.
