'This was a terrifying incident': Deputies will not be charged after Minnetonka shootout

The shootout, which left Clint Hoyhtya dead, happened after officers tried executing a search warrant on a different person.

MINNETONKA, Minn — The actions of officers in a deadly April shooting are being called justified after a review by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

The shootout, which resulted in the death of Clint Hoyhtya, happened on April 10 at a home in Minnetonka. Deputies were at the home to execute a search warrant for another person.

Body cameras showed one of the deputies knocking on the door, yelling "Come to the door, now" and that they would kick the door in. A voice inside was heard yelling "What the (expletive) do you want?" Deputies retreated, screaming "Got a gun!" Body camera video captured the initial shots being fired from inside the home.

Two deputies were treated on the scene and a third was taken to the hospital.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office said in a press release Thursday the deputies initially retreated to find cover, called for a negotiator, and attempted to convince Hoyhtya to stop shooting.

“In our review of the BCA’s investigation, we found no unlawful conduct by law enforcement,” Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said in the press release. “This was a terrifying incident that left an HCSO deputy hospitalized with a gunshot wound, endangered the lives of several other deputies and community members, and led to the death of Mr. Hoyhtya. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragedy, including the sheriff’s deputies, their families, impacted neighbors, and Mr. Hoyhtya’s family.”

The man authorities were originally looking for was arrested days later.
