Families impacted by police brutality speak out after DOJ report

Many community activists say they were grateful to collaborate with the DOJ on its investigation.

MINNEAPOLIS — The findings in the DOJ's report into the Minneapolis police department are stirring up raw emotions for families directly impacted by the actions outlined in the probe.

Andre Locke's son Amir was shot and killed during a no-knock warrant search by MPD.

"I'm thankful to witness history from the Department of Justice stepping into the city to lay the groundwork for meaningful change in our cities," said Locke.

Valarie Castile has been demanding change for the last seven years since her son Philando Castile was shot during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights.

"It just breaks my heart that we waited so long to get the information in black and white because we all know what goes on up here in the state of Minnesota and it's about time for you to react and for these changes to be made, because we're here, we're here, we want to help you," said Castile.

It's something Mark Sundberg, the father of Andrew Tekle Sundberg, who was shot during a stand-off with Minneapolis Police says must happen in order to ensure this new consent decree meets the needs of those directly impacted.

"You got to hope, maybe with a small 'H', but you still got to hope," said Sundberg.

"We look for accountability and accountability will happen, truth needs no support," said Locke.

Many community activists say they were grateful to collaborate with the DOJ on its investigation.

However, they are still skeptical of whether or not things will change.
