BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — The 3-year-old boy who was attacked by dogs last week in Brooklyn Park is not expected to survive, according to an online fundraising campaign.
In an update on a GoFundMe page set up for the family, the organizers said the child's parents had started the process to donate their son's organs.
"This will honor Covil's life and save more children's lives in hopes that no other parent has to endure the pain that they are experiencing right now."
The boy's mother also suffered serious injuries during the July 19 attack, having already undergone two surgeries, the GoFundMe said.
In their initial investigation, police said multiple officers fired their weapons at both dogs, killing one and injuring the other. The injured dog was taken to a nearby animal care facility following the attack, but its current status is unknown.
A search warrant filed in the case says the boy and his mother went to a home on Brooklyn Park Drive July 19 to look at a puppy. Police said one of the dogs started to attack the child and then a second dog jumped in. At that point, adults “started to defend the 3-year-old by using hammers and pick axes to get the dogs off the 3-year-old," according to the warrant.
The family's GoFundMe organizers said any money donated to the family will go toward incurring costs.
"If we can help them out by covering cost from being out of work, medical expenses, daily expenses of living in a hospital and costs that may occur in the near future it would be helping people who truly deserve it," they wrote.
