MILTONA, Minn. — A man was found dead in a Miltona house fire on Sunday night, according to the Douglas County Sherriff's Office.
On Jan. 1 at approximately 9:32 p.m. Douglas County officials were called to a house on County Road 102 Northeast near Miltona. There they found Charles DeMartelaere, who saw the fire and was attempting to go inside the house to get his elderly father, 85-year-old Gene DeMartelaere.
Charles was unable to do so because of the "smoke, heat and flames," according to a press release.
Officials found Gene dead on the main floor of the home, along with a dog. Charles was taken to Alomere Hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.
Douglas County officials say the cause of the fire is currently under investigation but does not appear to be suspicious.
