MINNEAPOLIS — A father was sentenced to five years in prison and two years of probation after pleading guilty to child neglect that resulted in the death of his 7-year-old daughter back in 2022.

Julius Fineday, Jr., of Red Lake, pleaded guilty earlier this year to willfully depriving his daughter of food, health care and other basic needs, ultimately causing her death on Dec. 25, 2022.

During Tuesday's sentencing, Chief Judge Patrick J. Schlitz said Fineday neglected the child in "nearly every way," saying he failed to provide any necessary care throughout most of 2022. According to court documents, the death was determined to be from a combination of malnutrition and a Group A streptococcal infection, which prosecutors say was caused by neglect from Jan. 1, 2022 up until the child's death.

"Neglecting or abusing a child will result in negative consequences not only for the child, but for the responsible adult," Schlitz said during the hearing.

Sharon Rosebear was convicted of child neglect by a federal jury back in April after evidence showed she acted as one of the child's caretakers. She's still awaiting sentencing.
