Fire and fights at Cooper High School

A chaotic scene Tuesday afternoon at Cooper High School that police say ended with multiple fights breaking out.

NEW HOPE, Minn — A chaotic scene Tuesday afternoon at Cooper High School that police say ended with multiple fights breaking out.

It all started around 11:30 Tuesday morning when New Hope Police say a small fire started in a school bathroom.

Because of the fire, the school was evacuated and students were taken to the nearby stadium.

While students were in that stadium, police say multiple fights broke out. They said they know of at least one student who had minor injuries from a fight.

"A couple of situations just set off and some students [were] going toward the situation," said Superintendent Carlton Jenkins, "That was unfortunate...I think the staff responded well to it and I think the overwhelming majority of our students really responded very well to it, and we [had] some who didn't."

Jenkins says they decided to end school for the day early, because after the ordeal, they were close to the end of the school day anyway.

As for the fire, police say it caused significant damage.

They're not sure exactly how it started, but they said they have identified a juvenile suspect who they think might be responsible.

No one was injured in the fire.
