WHITE BEAR LAKE, Minn. - A fire in the attic of a home on White Bear Lake caused significant damage early Wednesday.

White Bear Lake firefighter were called to the home on 2524 Manitou Island Avenue around 2:10 a.m., and found smoke pouring from the eaves. Crews made entry and found the attic ablaze.

The lone occupant of the house escaped unharmed.

Chief Tim Vadnais says approximately three dozen firefighters from White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, Vadnais Heights and Hugo spent most of the night working the blaze. it was a difficult job as a new roof had been installed over an old one, and insulation installed in the attic was burning and smoldering.

At this point the cause of the fire is suspected to be insulation packed too close to a heat source, but that is unofficial. Damage to the structure is said to be extensive.
