When that bitter cold hits, our first responders can take the brunt of it.
That was the case Wednesday night along Wayzata Bay, when a multi-million dollar home under construction went up in flames.
Karin Weis at nearby McCormicks saw it.
"Never seen a fire like that," said Weis. "Poor guys out there."
Wayzata's Fire Chief Kevin Klapprich says crews battled the fire for 12 hours at least.
"Not something that was easy," said Klapprich.
He says this fire shows how tough firefighters have it in subzero temperatures.
"No matter how hard you try when it's that cold, they're going to get cold. They're going to get cold feet, they're going to get cold hands," said Klapprich.
Crews rotated in and out of shelter.
"Tried to warm them up as best we could," said Klapprich.
He says the strong winds helped fuel the fire and the cold weather froze the water that was being transported in.
Conditions like this prolong the job as well.
With that in mind, Woodland's mayor came to thank Kevin for his crew's efforts.
"Did a great job yeah," said Weis.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Nobody was inside the home at the time of the fire.
