MINNEAPOLIS — Gov. Tim Walz ordered flags across Minnesota to fly at half-staff Friday after a police officer and two others died in a shooting incident in south Minneapolis Thursday night.
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) said squads responded to a report of an apartment shooting on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Ave. Minneapolis police officer Jamal Mitchell was fatally shot after he attempted to render medical assistance to victims. Another police officer and a firefighter were wounded in the incident while two men were shot inside the apartment — one man died at the scene and one is hospitalized in "grave" condition. Another person was found wounded in their car.
The suspected shooter was one of those who died at the scene, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
Mitchell had been on the MPD force for less than two years. He was recognized in February 2023 for helping to save two elderly residents from a house fire. He told KARE 11 that it was his third official day on the job during the rescue.
"I knew Jamal. I had the distinct honor of swearing him in as a member of this agency. Shortly after hitting the street I commended him and honored him for running into a burning house to rescue an elderly couple trapped inside," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara after returning from an out-of-town event. "Jamal was engaged to be married. Jamal died a hero, and like police officers in Minneapolis standing behind me here and everywhere, he was one of the few who have the courage to stand up and answer the call every single day. He died doing what we asked him to do for the rest of us."
Officer Mitchell leaves behind his fiance and four children.
