MADISON, Wis. — A former University of Wisconsin-Madison wide receiver has been identified as one of the three student athletes killed in a shooting on the campus of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville Sunday night.

On Monday, Jim Ryan, the University of Virginia's president, identified former Badger Devin Chandler, and UVA football players Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry as the victims in the shooting.

Chandler, who transferred from UW-Madison to the University of Virginia after last season, played 10 games for the Badgers in 2020 and 2021 combined, according to the Cavaliers website.

"I was shocked and saddened to hear of Devin’s passing," Wisconsin interim head coach Jim Leonhard said in a statement Monday. "He had a lasting impact on his teammates, even after he left UW, which is a testament to the type of person he was. His personality was infectious and he was a joy to be around. Our team is hurting for him and his family. I want to personally extend my condolences to his family and the Virginia football family."

The Badger football program also released a statement Monday in response to the school shooting:

The Badger football family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry. Devin was a tremendous young man and a great teammate. He will be greatly missed. This is a difficult time for our players and staff because of the lasting impact Devin had on his friends and teammates. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and the Virginia football family.

Two other victims following Sunday night's shooting have been hospitalized, with one in critical condition, according to The University of Virginia Police Chief Tim Longo.

Officials say UVA student Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. is in custody and faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder.

The shooting led the university to cancel classes and all extracurricular activities, including a men's basketball game against Northern Iowa, on Monday.
