Future of Superior apartment building in flux following partial collapse

The Franklin Apartments and a neighboring daycare were evacuated after a small section of the building collapsed, severing a main natural gas line.

SUPERIOR, Wis. — Engineers are working to determine the structural fitness of an apartment building in Superior, WI, following a partial collapse Thursday afternoon. 

Superior police and firefighters were dispatched to the Franklin Apartments at 210 37th Ave. E. and discovered that a small section of the building had collapsed, with a main natural gas line being severed. Officers evacuated the apartments and an adjoining daycare while gas and power to the building was shut off. 

Superior’s Fire Chief Camron Vollbrecht told KBJR/Northern News Now that the collapse happened over an old utility room that had two old boilers. He shared that two residents inside at the time of the collapse, and both got out safely.

Fire officials said the collapse occurred in an area of the building housing two boilers and a main natural gas line.

The city’s structural engineer was called in to inspect the building, and eventually all residents were allowed to return to their apartments except those in two units that will undergo a bit more scrutiny. 

No one was injured in the incident.
