Here's how to help the family of fallen MPD Officer Jamal Mitchell

Officer Jamal Mitchell, 36, was killed Thursday while responding to a call just south of downtown.

MINNEAPOLIS — Donations are being collected to help the family of fallen Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell, who was killed while responding to a call just south of downtown Thursday evening.

Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, Law Enforcement Labor Services (LELS) and the Minneapolis Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) are collecting donations through the LELS Benevolent Fund, where all proceeds will go directly to Officer Mitchell's family. According to the MPPOA, this is the only donation platform verified by the city and Officer Mitchell's family.

There are two ways to donate:

  • Online at www.LELS.ORG/benevolent-fund
  • Mail a check with "Attention: Officer Mitchell" to Law Enforcement Labor Services Benevolent Fund at 2700 Freeway Boulevard, Suite 799, Brooklyn Center, MN, 55430.

Officer Mitchell, 36, was one of the three people killed Thursday, including a person who was inside the apartment where officers were called. Officials say the suspected shooter is also dead.

Officers were responding to a report of a shooting in an apartment building on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue around 5:15 p.m. Thursday. While responding, officials say Officer Mitchell got out of his vehicle after he noticed people approximately two blocks from the reported shooting scene who were injured. While he was attempting to provide medical assistance, Mitchell was ambushed. Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Superintendent Drew Evans told reporters he viewed video of the shooting, describing it as a close encounter.

The BCA said four people were also injured: one in the apartment, one officer, one firefighter, and a bystander in a vehicle in the neighborhood. The BCA said the firefighter was treated and released but the others remained hospitalized as of Friday afternoon.
