MINNEAPOLIS — With the new year comes new leadership as government agencies continue to hold swearing-in ceremonies.
On Tuesday, Dawanna Witt officially became the first Black Sheriff in Hennepin County's history.
"Hennepin County I am grateful. I am honored. I am humbled that you have voted me into this office. When I talk about commitment to you I am committing my heart to ensuring we bring public safety, collaboration and effective methods to make sure all people feel safe and secure, not just the illusion, but actually being safe and secure," said Witt.
Meanwhile, Mary Moriarity was sworn in as Hennepin County Attorney. Moriarty is replacing Mike Freeman, who chose not to run for reelection.
"I was elected by the people of Hennepin County and I am accountable to you. You recognize what we have done in the past has not made us safe and it has harmed people in our community. Together, we are creating a new path forward," said Moriarity.
On Monday, Tim Walz and Peggy Flanagan were sworn in for their second term as governor and lieutenant governor, alongside elected officials Attorney General Keith Ellison, Secretary of State Steve Simon and State Auditor Julie Blaha.
