Hit-and-run turns deadly in Maplewood

Police processed the scene overnight and are searching for the suspect's vehicle Thursday morning.

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. — One woman is dead and another is injured after a car struck two pedestrians Wednesday night in Maplewood.

Maplewood Police Lieutenant Joe Steiner said the hit-and-run occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on Larpenteur Avenue between Barclay and Dieter streets. Officers were dispatched to the scene and found two victims, a 23-year-old woman from Minneapolis and a 22-year-old woman from St. Paul.

First responders rendered aid to both victims, and the 23-year-old was transported to Regions hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The victim will be identified once family is notified and an autopsy performed.

The driver of the vehicle who struck the women left the scene. Police said they located that vehicle later Thursday morning, but did not say whether the driver was in custody.

Maplewood police and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) blocked off the scene for accident reconstruction and to process a vehicle left in the middle of the street with its driver's door open. Roads were reopened just before sunrise Thursday.
