MINNEAPOLIS — Monday marked a hot first day on campus for more than 2,300 incoming freshmen at the University of Minnesota.

Move-in day is typically a happy and emotional time for families, but this year the heat stole the show.

Volunteers say most families were focused on unloading their vehicles as quickly as possible to spend less time in the heat.

University leaders say volunteers brought in more than 5,000 bottles of water to keep everyone hydrated.

"We want everyone to be safe today," Associate Director of Residential Life Grant Anderson says. "We are reminding our staff to rotate volunteers out for breaks every so often so everyone has a chance to cool off."

University officials say the Twin Cities campus features nine dorms and four apartment buildings and all of them have air conditioning except for Sanford Hall and Bailey Hall.

"For those students what we do is create extra space and opportunity for the students in those buildings is they can cool off in the air conditioning in common areas, such as the dining centers and some lounge areas that are air conditioned and we try to make those spaces available for those students," Anderson said.

On Tuesday, another 2,400 freshmen will move into the dorms.
