CASS LAKE, Minn. — Human remains believed to be several hundred years old were recently found on the shores of Leech Lake, prompting law enforcement to remind the public about being respectful if this is something you ever encounter.

In a joint press release, authorities from the Cass County Sheriff's Office and Lake Leech Band of Ojibwe Police said authorities were contacted Saturday night by wild ricers on Leech Lake.

Deputies responded and found what they believe are the remains of three individuals that are several hundred years old on the lake's shore. The Leech Lake Heritage Sites program - along with the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council - are helping make sure the site and remains are secure, with plans to preserve and restore them to their original state.

The Sheriff's Office did not say exactly where the remains were found on the lake, but said it is a "known cultural site." Now, authorities are reminding citizens that if you find human remains, call law enforcement and do not disturb the area.

"In doing so, this ensures vital evidence is preserved, along with being respectful of those who were here before us," the press release stated. "Knowingly disturbing suspected cultural sites and/or cemeteries can have civil and criminal repercussions."
