MINNEAPOLIS — Hyundai and the Minneapolis Police Department are teaming up to help out owners of vehicles targeted by thieves.
On Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11 technicians from Hyundai will be in the parking lot of the old Kmart building at 10 W Lake St. to install free security upgrades for the vehicles.
The offer is for all "Hyundai drivers with affected vehicles. No paperwork or appointment is necessary," according to the news release.
The event will run each day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Hyundai and other vehicles have been increasingly stolen after car thieves showed off a stealing technique popularized on TikTok and other social media platforms.
Police officials said Hyundai drivers should arrive in their vehicles on Blaisdell Ave. S side of the parking lot.
A greeter will ask the Hyundai drivers for vehicle information.
While the technicians provide anti-theft software upgrades for the vehicles, the drivers can wait in a heated tent with seating and bathroom facilities.
The upgrade should take approximately 30 minutes.
The following models are eligible for free upgrades:
Accent - 2018-2022
Elantra - 2011-2022
Elantra GT – 2013-2020
Genesis Coupe – 2013 - 2014
